Austin Wayne Self earns career-best second Truck Series finish at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – AM Racing driver Austin Wayne Self had to play the strategy game during Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

The strategy paid off to near perfection as Self was able to negotiate past a wild last lap backstretch melee to earn a second-place finish to kick off his 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season.

In practice Thursday, Self, 20, focused solely on single-truck runs given AM Racing’s newly introduced 32 team did not have owner points to fall back on as did their 22 Team

That focus paid off with Self qualifying 22nd on Friday afternoon.

Just two laps into the race, a 17-truck accident occurred entering Turn 1 causing some front-end damage to Self’s No. 32 Don’t Mess with Texas Toyota Tundra.

Quick work instructed by crew chief Bill Henderson sent the Texan back into the race on the lead lap.

For the remaining two stages, Self kept his truck out of trouble and on the lead lap knowing if he didn’t suffer any further damage he would be a contender during the third 60-lap stage shootout.

Throughout the final stage, Self kept his sights on the leaders, while hovering between 10th and 13th.

When a caution waived less than five laps from the finish, it set the tone for a chaotic finish.

Restarting 12th on a green, white, checker, Self charged up the middle with a run to seventh before moving to the bottom going into turn 1 for a final push to the checkered flag.

When trucks began spinning and flying through the air on the backstretch, the Austin, Texas native stayed on the gas, drove his truck to the bottom and cleared the carnage to emerge to a second-place finish when the field was frozen under caution.

Along with Self’s career-best run, AM Racing Teammate J.J. Yeley scored his personal Truck Series best at the 2.5-mile superspeedway with a ninth place run in the No. 22 Legrand / Superior Essex Toyota.

The effort was Self’s first top-five finish and second career top-10 in 23 races. Self also bested his Daytona performance from last February at the “World Center of Racing” where he finished 19th.

“What an unbelievable night for our AM Racing team,” said Self. “For putting this team together three weeks ago, a second-place finish in Daytona says a lot about our Program. I can’t thank Bill (Henderson, Crew Chief) enough, our guys on the AM Racing Team and of course our AM Racing partners, especially AM Technical Solutions and B&D Industries Inc. Thanks to Toyota and the Born in Texas Toyota Tundra. Big gratitude to Mark Cronquist and the Joe Gibbs Engine Shop.

“We’ll look for some more of these types of runs this season.”

Team principal Tim Self said he was extremely appreciative and humbled by the performance of his two teams Friday night.

“Great Team effort!,” said Tim Self.” Kevin Cywinski (Director of Competition) and the entire shop came together and worked their butts off the last two weeks getting two ARCA teams and two Truck teams to Daytona on back to back weekends. I’m just grateful to be part of this team.”

“I was proud to see both work very well together during the race and on that last lap, both drivers did their best with all the chaos and we came away with a top-five and top-10 finish. Other than a win, it doesn’t get much better than that. It may have not been the win, but it sure feels like one.”

Next up for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is a double-header with the XFINITY Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the running of the Active Pest Control 200 on Sat., Mar. 4.

JJ Yeley Readies NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Return at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Set to run a one-race deal with AM Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, JJ Yeley is amped about the opportunity to compete in Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 for the first time since 2010.

Thanks to support from Legrand and Superior Essex, the Phoenix, Ariz. native will drive AM Racing’s flagship entry, the No 22 Toyota Camry for his 23rd career start and second at the “World Center of Racing.”

“I’m really thankful for this chance to run at Daytona again,” said Yeley who will also compete in Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race for TriStar Motorsports. “Running in both the XFINITY and Truck Series this weekend is a good opportunity for me to get into a rhythm. The truck should be plenty fast, so I’m anxious to see what we can do in 100 laps.”

Knowing a good finish could ultimately lead for more races for Yeley in the Truck Series, the two-time USAC Sprint Car champion is focused, but also knows the unpredictableness that comes along with superspeedway racing.

“The races at Daytona and Talladega are great equalizers, which sometimes produce some great stories and we’re hoping to be one of those great stories Friday night,” Yeley said. “I enjoy this type of racing and AM Racing had some solid results on the superspeedways last year, so I’m hoping with my experience we can up the notch a little bit and see if we can’t come out of the box swinging.”

Unlike last year, AM Racing won’t be a solo team at Daytona. The team announced on Tuesday that Austin Wayne Self, the 2015 ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year will compete in a second truck as a teammate to Yeley in the No. 32 AM Racing Toyota Tundra.

When it comes to superspeedway racing, the assurance of a teammate could be the difference of finishing at the front or bringing up the rear.

“Austin has plenty of experience on a superspeedway between ARCA and Trucks, so I’m very comfortable working with him during practice, qualifying and the race,” added Yeley. “We both have jobs to do, but we’re focused on doing a good job together in the interest of the race team. With the addition of Joe Gibbs Racing engines, we just might have that extra boost to be the race’s biggest sleepers. We’ll see.”

Driving for a still relatively new team in Truck Series competition, Yeley will have experience on top of the box with crew chief Rick Ren calling the shots. Despite 28 career wins as a crew chief in Trucks, the veteran has never won at Daytona. That’s a statistic Yeley hopes to change Friday night.

From a team side, AM Racing team principal Tim Self says he has confidence in both of his drivers’ abilities at Daytona.

“Daytona is unpredictable, but we have two very capable drivers,” said Self. “As a team, we feel very confident in the trucks we’re bringing to the track. We’ll just see how our cards are stacked in qualifying and then just exercise some patience in the race to make sure we’re hopefully around in the end when it matters most.”

Overall, Yeley, 40, has a combined 23 starts at the 2.5-mile superspeedway across NASCAR’s top-three national divisions with two XFINITY Series poles, one top-five and four top-10s. Yeley’s best finish at Daytona is fourth in the 2006 XFINITY Series opener after starting on the pole driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Austin Wayne Self to Drive Second AM Racing Truck at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Surrounded by plenty of support, officials from AM Racing confirmed today that 20-year-old Austin Wayne Self will drive the team’s newest entry, the No. 32 Toyota Tundra in Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

“I can’t wait to get back to Daytona this week,” said Self. “The guys at the shop in North Carolina have really been working hard to put two competitive trucks together and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do on the track later this week.”

Aiding Self’s efforts this week is longtime partner AM Technical Solutions.

Looking for his second career top-10 finish on Friday night, Self knows finding himself in the right spot at the right time is crucial to superspeedway success, but the former ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year is also hoping to work close with new teammate JJ Yeley who will drive the team’s flagship No. 22 Toyota Tundra Friday night.

“JJ is pretty good at superspeedway racing and I know he can teach me a thing or two,” Self explained. “I plan to talk to him a lot during practice on Thursday and see if we can’t deploy a strategy that will be effective for the both of us. When it comes down to the race, we just have to see how it goes. If we can find ourselves together, we know what the goal is. Hopefully, we can make it a reality.”

Justin Fontaine Upbeat About ARCA Debut At Daytona

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards rookie Justin Fontaine (@driverFontaine) will tell you that it was extremely hard to wipe the smile off his face following preseason testing last month with his Win-Tron Racing team at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

Five weeks later, Fontaine is smiling again, upbeat about returning to the “World Center of Racing” for his ARCA debut in Saturday afternoon’s Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 driven by General Tire.

For his superspeedway debut, Fontaine will drive the No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota Camry for Win-Tron Racing, part of a two-car operation for the Mooresville, N.C.-based team with teammate Gus Dean.

“There aren’t words to describe how excited I am about going to Daytona this week,” said Fontaine. “I’ve been ready for race week since after the test. We had a good test session and the car had a lot of speed. I know I still have plenty to learn, but I know that I have a really good team around me and that’s important, especially at a place like Daytona.”

Speaking of the test, Fontaine, a veteran of Late Models turned in the 13th quickest lap overall in a two-day session that saw 63 drivers turn at least one lap around the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

“We spent time in single car runs with the team easing me into the draft,” recalled Fontaine. “We know that the draft is going to be super crucial this week with qualifying and the race, so I’ll be working close with Gus (Dean) and the other competitors and hope we can post a good lap in practice that put us with a good group for qualifying.

“When it comes down to the race, we’ll take it from there. I’ve watched a lot of You Tube over the last two weeks going back and watching the old ARCA races from Daytona. I’ve seen mistakes and what works and what doesn’t, I don’t plan to forget what I watched.”

For his ARCA debut, the Fletcher, N.C. native will be surrounded by veterans. Whether it’s in the garage with crew chief Bill Henderson, guidance from above from spotter Richard Coleman or in the hauler with team principals Kevin Cywinski and Tim Self, Fontaine knows he’s in good hands.

And if all that input isn’t enough, Fontaine’s cousin, Chris Fontaine, a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver and often considered a superspeedway ace has also offered support.

“I’m thankful to have all the support around me that I do,” Fontaine said. “With all their advice, I hope it means good things during the race for our No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota Camry.”

Fontaine joins Win-Tron Racing, the driver development partner of AM Racing for several races on the ARCA Racing Series tour in 2017 starting with the Feb. 19 Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 driven by General Tire.

Tim Self, team principal at AM Racing attended the ARCA test to watch Fontaine make his first laps at Daytona and is confident of good things in the series’ season-opener.

“Like I said at the test, I’m proud of Justin,” said Self. “He learned a lot at Daytona during the test and without a doubt that confidence will help this weekend. Kevin (Cywinski) and I have worked together to make sure we put the personnel around Justin that he’ll be comfortable with and that he can trust.

“Once that green flag drops though, it’s all up to Justin and Richard and I think they’ll do great.”

The Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 driven by General Tire (80 laps / 200 miles) is the first of 20 races on the 2017 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Thurs., Feb. 16 with a two-hour session from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. A final practice session has been etched in on Fri., Feb. 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Group qualifying is set for later in the day at 3:30 p.m. The preamble for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ “Clash” is set to take the green flag on Sat., Feb. 18 shortly after 4:00 p.m. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities.

JJ Yeley joins AM Racing for Daytona Truck Series opener

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Officials from AM Racing (@AMRacingNASCAR) announced today that NASCAR veteran driver JJ Yeley will pilot the team’s No. 22 Toyota Tundra for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season-opening NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Friday night, February 24th.

Yeley, a native of Phoenix, Ariz. will make his 23rd career NCWTS start and first since last March’s race at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway. In Yeley’s previous 22 starts, the two-time USAC Sprint Car champion has one start at the “World Center of Racing” in 2010 resulting in 10th place finish.

The partnership for now is a one-race agreement with industry veteran Rick Ren serving as crew chief.

Yeley’s efforts will be backed by Legrand and Superior Essex.

“I am looking forward to being behind the wheel of the No. 22 Superior Essex Toyota for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway in the Camping World Truck Series,” said Yeley. “It’s a great opportunity that Tim Self, AM Racing, Legrand and Superior Essex put together, and I’m glad to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get out on the track and drive the Toyota Tundra to the front.”

Overall, Yeley, 40, has a combined 23 starts at the 2.5-mile superspeedway across NASCAR’s top-three national divisions with two XFINITY Series poles, one top-five and four top-10s. Yeley’s best finish at Daytona is fourth in the 2006 XFINITY Series opener after starting on the pole driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Last week, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team announced they have switched engine manufacturers for the 2017 season. Joe Gibbs Racing engines will power the team’s Toyota Tundras this season starting with the 100-lap race at Daytona.

The NextEra Energy Resources 250 (100 laps / 250 miles) is the first of 23 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on the 2017 schedule. Practice begins on Thurs, Feb. 23 from 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. A final practice session is set for 4:00 p.m. – 4:55 p.m. Qualifying is set for race day, Fri., Feb. 24 beginning at 4:30 p.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 7:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1, the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90).

About JJ Yeley:

JJ Yeley began his racing career at age 14, rising to prominence as he continued to add victories and record-breaking performances to his track record. In 1998 at the age of 21, he became the youngest driver at the time to qualify for the Indianapolis 500.

In 2003, he broke the record for single-season victories with 24 USAC wins, and joined Tony Stewart as only the second driver in USAC history to win the “Triple Crown” by taking the Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown championships in a single season.

From USAC, Yeley moved to NASCAR where he has enjoyed a modest career competing in the sport’s top-three divisions. In addition to racing, Yeley participates in numerous charities nationwide, with a special interest in children’s charities and fund raising events.

AM Racing to utilize Joe Gibbs Racing engines in 2017

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – In an effort to enhance their NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) program for the 2017 season, officials from AM Racing (@AMRacingNASCAR) announced today their Toyota Tundra’s will be powered by Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) engines.

AM Racing headquartered in Mooresville, N.C. is entering their second season of NCWTS competition beginning with this month’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 24.

Team principal Tim Self says the change in engine providers was part of the team’s annual assessment.

“We’re looking forward to running our Toyota Tundra’s with horsepower from Joe Gibbs Racing this season,” said Self. “In a constant effort to look at opportunities to enhance the overall performance of our young team, we felt the change in engine providers offers that chance to strengthen our on-track product even more.”

Self added, “We look forward to Daytona later this month and hope for a strong debut with JGR engines to give AM Racing and our partners a good boost to start the 2017 season.”
