AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self hunt for top-10 finish at Bristol Motor Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn: 16 races down, seven to go.

On the heels of a strong performance last Thursday night at Richmond (Va.) Raceway in the ToyotaCare 250, Austin Wayne Self and his AM Racing team head to Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway for another Thursday night showdown in the UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics.

And with the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series set to open their Playoffs in Thunder Valley, Self won’t have an opportunity to go for a championship title, but he does plan to make some noise of his own over the final two months of the season.

“I always look forward to Bristol, because it’s such a cool place to race,” said Self.

“Right now, I think our AM Racing team has some good momentum and even if we don’t have the all the finishes to show for it lately, we’ve had some really fast No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverados and I hope we can continue to showcase that at Bristol.”

Self, 24, has four previous Truck Series starts at Bristol with back-to-back top-15 finishes in 2018 and 2019 respectively and is determined to up the ante in the UNOH 200 this year.

Hunting for their first top-10 finish of the season, Self says it’s their mission to execute that goal and Bristol is certainly a place where the goal can be accomplished.

“We’re hunting a top-10 finish this week, we want to get ourselves there,” added Self. “I think we can do it.

“The last two years – we’ve had rather good results at Bristol – all things considered. You can’t hide at Bristol. But I feel like I’ve become a better driver there with experience and track time.

“Certainly not having practice or qualifying can be a little of a hindrance, but it is the same boat for everyone, so we just have to take the challenge in stride. Bristol is one of those tracks where momentum and focus are key – while just making sure you have the grip in the truck to be able to capitalize on key passing moments.

“Staying out of trouble too is huge at Bristol. As we get closer and closer to the end of the season, the intensity ramps up and the stakes are high and that sometimes leads to a lot of action and Bristol is known to be a place where the action can hot and heavy.”

Even out of the Playoff picture, it’s still business as usual for the AM Racing team as Self expects the upward performance trend to continue to climb aboard his No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado from now until Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway in November.

“We’re a relatively small team, but sometimes David can beat the Goliath and at times we’ve been able to show that on track with our heart and passion of racing,” added Self. “We have a lot of people, including our partners who are devoted to our race team and focused on seeing our team succeed not only in 2020 but as we start to think ahead to 2021.”

In addition to primary partners GO TEXAN and AM Technical Solutions, AIRBOX Air Purifier, Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle, Kreuz Market and Prasek’s will serve as associate partners in the 17th race of the year.

In 100 NGROTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has two top-fives (second at Daytona 2017, fifth at Michigan 2019) and seven top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.6 during his five years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 17th in the championship standings with seven races remaining.

Austin Wayne Self Quote: “Man, we definitely had our ups and downs on Thursday night at Richmond. Our No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado was extremely fast.

“With varying pit strategy we lost a lap early in the race, but even after we got spun out by an aggressive driver in Stage 3, our truck was so good – especially on newer tires we were able to rally back and charge through the field with a positive finish.

“Hopefully, we can take this recent momentum for our AM Racing team and get a top-10 finish next Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.”

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self ready for Richmond Raceway debut

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self ready for Richmond Raceway debut

RICHMOND, Va. It’s hard to imagine that despite the Coronavirus pandemic that literally sent the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series into a standstill for more than two months, the series heads to Richmond (Va.) Raceway for Thursday night’s ToyotaCare 250 for the final race of the regular season.

And while Self and his family-owned team AM Racing team are on the outside looking in as far as the Truck Series Playoffs are concerned, Richmond is a dynamic short track that sure is to present an opportunity for a potential surprise winner.

“I know the odds aren’t in our favor, but sometimes short track racing delivers bombshell winners and we’re planning to go to Richmond and fight hard to be one of the biggest upsets of the season.

“I realize a lot would have to go our way and we would need some luck along the way, but this AM Racing team has done a good job without practice or qualifying to bring me fast No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverados this year and Richmond should be no exception.”

Like Darlington this past weekend, most of the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series field doesn’t have any experience at the 0.875-mile Richmond short track and the 24-year-old driver hopes that will level the playing field as far as the competition.

“Even though Darlington was a demanding race track, I thought the race was very competitive,” Self said. “I expect the same for Richmond on Thursday night. I believe it will be only a handful of drivers or less who have prior experience at Richmond. It’s important to make the most out of Stage 1 and get a good read on the track and the balance of our No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado so we can push the attack in Stage 2 and 3.”

Fighting for their first top-10 finish of the year, Self says his team is getting closer to achieving that goal as the homestretch of the 2020 season quickly approaches.

“Despite everything with COVID-19 this year, I feel we have made some good gains this season,” added Self. “We’ve fought hard and even with less track time – I feel like our trucks have been faster and I think we’ve shown that a lot here lately.”

Should the team fall short of earning a Playoff spot, it will continue to be business as usual for the AM Racing team as Self expects the upward performance trend to continue to climb aboard his No.

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self fired up heading to Darlington Raceway

DARLINGTON, S.C.: Just two races remaining in the regular NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) season, Austin Wayne Self and his AM Racing head to Darlington (S.C.) Raceway fired up after being taken out in the closing laps last weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

Heading towards another strong finish for his family-owned team at Gateway, Austin Wayne Self was hit by another competitor with less than 10 laps left in the race which not only eliminated a strong finish – but left the team with a bitter taste.

But, trying to put Gateway’s result in the rearview mirror, the duo is ready to get down to business in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series return to Darlington after a nine-year absence and fight for their first top-10 finish of the season in the South Carolina Education Lottery 200.

“I’m fired up heading to Darlington,” said Self. “I’m still frustrated about what happened at Gateway. My guys brought me a good No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado and a driver who isn’t running a full season wrecked us for one spot on the track. It didn’t make any sense then and still doesn’t now.

“My guys work really hard on our trucks to have that happen. But we’ll fight back, stand up and be better because of it. Darlington is an opportunity and challenge for us and one that we’ll certainly accept.”

While nearly the entire field hasn’t turned a lap at the historic “Lady in Black,” – Self says everyone will be on the same playing field in the penultimate race of the regular season opening the door for comers and goers.

“I’m heading to Darlington with a lot of questions and not a lot of answers,” Self said. “I watched races from there in the past – but now I’ll have a chance to race there. I know the racing groove is narrow but that should make the competition fierce and the race eventful.

“We’re going there with an open mind. I feel like I have one of the smartest crew chiefs in the garage with Eddie (Troconis) and I’ll be relying on him throughout the first stage to help put us in a good spot for Stage 2 and Stage 3.

“I know the Playoffs loom and even though it might be a longshot, we have a chance to make it and we’ll fight to the checkered flag at Richmond next weekend to try and make that happen.”

Should the team fall short of earning a Playoff spot, it will continue to be business as usual for the AM Racing team as Self expects the upward performance trend to continue to climb aboard his No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado from now until Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway in November.

“We’re a relatively small team, but we’ve been making some big strides this season with our heart and passion of racing,” added Self. “We have a lot of people, including our partners who are devoted to our race team and focused on seeing our team succeed not only in 2020 but as we start to think ahead to 2021.”

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self ready to get loud and proud at Gateway

MADISON, Ill: With just three races remaining in the regular NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series season, Austin Wayne Self and his AM Racing team trek to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway with a chance to spoil the Playoff party in Sunday afternoon’s WWT Raceway 200 presented by CK Power.

Of course, a win would be one of the biggest upsets in the series this season, but it would be a huge payday as well for the Statesville, N.C.-based team as the event is the finale for the three-race Triple Truck Challenge which offers a bonus for any Truck Series driver and team who are able to capture a victory.

And while some may consider Self and his family-owned team a longshot to win a race this season, that’s fine as far as he and crew chief Eddie Troconis are concerned – as the opportunity to win is what keeps them motivated to get to the track each weekend.

Even though the team struggled last weekend at Dover and finished 23rd, the No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet team has proven time and time again, especially in 2020 that they are able to bounce back in a competitive fashion.

“Dover was a tough weekend for us, but it will make us better for the long haul,” said driver Austin Wayne Self. “We’re always learning with these trucks and Eddie and I are always still learning things together as driver and crew chief.

“Dover is behind us though and we’re focused on Gateway this weekend and the chance to get there and spoil the party.”

As for World Wide Technology Raceway, the Austin, Tex. native will make his fourth career start at the 1.25-mile oval. With an average finish of 20.3 with starts in 2016, 2018 and 2019 and two top-17 finishes – the 24-year-old is eager to improve and propel his AM Racing team into the spotlight.

“Gateway can definitely be a challenging track because the corners are so different,” said Self. “It really wears on the handling, but it makes you feel like you need something different for every corner.

“With this new formula, we should start somewhere around 20th and hopefully we can make some good forward progress in the opening stage that sets the tone for the final two stages. Of course, we’re hungry to win – but if we can’t find ourselves in that position to win, we’ll take a top-10 finish and look ahead to Darlington.”

In addition to primary partners GO TEXAN and AM Technical Solutions, AIRBOX Air Purifier, Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle, Kreuz Market and Prasek’s will serve as associate partners in the 14th race of the year.

In 97 NGROTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has two top-fives (second at Daytona 2017, fifth at Michigan 2019) and seven top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.5 during his five years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 17th in the championship standings with 10 races remaining.

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self ready to tame Monster Mile

AM Racing, Austin Wayne Self ready to tame Monster Mile

DOVER, Del: Bouncing back in spectacular fashion from their late-race mishap at Michigan with a season-high 11th place run last Sunday at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course, Austin Wayne Self and his AM Racing team head to Dover (Del.) International Speedway determined to deliver a top-10 finish in Friday afternoon’s KDI Office Technology 200.

Switching gears from road racing to short track racing, Friday’s  200-lap slugfest is the first of five consecutive races with the track length under 1.5-miles and taking the series’ through the end of their first race of the Playoffs next month at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

While looking for a Playoff spot by virtue of a victory in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS), Self and his Eddie Troconis-led team have been showcasing speed over the past six weeks which undoubtedly puts them as a sleeper should the carpet unravel, the dots connect and luck on their side over the next four races.

“I’m really proud of this AM Racing team,” said Self. “While Michigan was a bummer with our finish, our performance was something to be proud of. Last weekend at Daytona we were able to showcase that whether big track, small track or road course – we have speed in our No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverados and it has our team upbeat about this next stretch of races.”

Self returns to Dover where he has three previous starts in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, including a track-best of 15th in 2018.

“Dover is a cool race track with a lot of banking but it’s a place where I feel like you have to be aggressive in order to have a good finish,” said Self.”

“Track position is important at a place like Dover and while we’ll be likely starting mid-pack again based on the formula, it will be important for us to use the start and restarts to our advantage to get as many positions as we can. Sometimes, the race take a long green-flag look to it and others it’s a caution-fest, so you have to be prepared for anything.

“I’ve never been to Dover without practice or qualifying, so we’re going to start with our basics and what we learned last year there and hope we can build off that for the rest of the race.”

Of course, the goal is to try and put the Statesville, N.C.-based AM Racing team in Victory Lane before the Playoffs launch at Bristol, but the Austin, Tex. native says if his team doesn’t make a Playoff berth this year – he expects the performance trend to continue to climb aboard his No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado from now until Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway in November.

“We’re a relatively small team, but we’re making big strides with our heart and passion of racing,” added Self. “We have a lot of people, including our partners who are devoted to our race team and focused on seeing our team succeed not only in 2020 but as we start to think ahead to 2021.”
