Austin Wayne Self, AM Racing ready to roar in the Motor City

BROOKLYN, Michigan: Fresh off a solid top-15 finish in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) race this past Thursday night at Eldora Speedway, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team return to pavement racing for Saturday afternoon’s Corrigan Oil 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

Self and his Mooresville, N.C.-based team are upbeat about motoring to the Motor City aiming to deliver their third top-10 finish together this season just outside of Detroit.

“Michigan is a pretty cool race track,” said Self. “It’s a fast place with wide lanes and provides plenty of opportunities to pass – like a superspeedway.

“As fast as Michigan is though, it’s also a momentum track and you need to have that momentum in the draft to make that pass, especially on the straightaways.”

Self will make his fourth start at the 2.0-mile and is eager to build on his track-best finish of 11th last August. His worst truck finish in the Irish Hills is 16th in his track debut in 2016.

Additionally, the Austin, Texas native has two ARCA Menards Series starts at Michigan with two top-10 finishes and a ARCA track best of third in 2015.

Self chalks up his solid finishes at Michigan to balanced race cars and confidence behind the wheel.

“You have to be on your game at Michigan,” added Self. “One slip and you can lose a lot of time. Sometimes, it feels like every lap is a qualifying run. If you get into the pack, you find yourself battling back and forth for position thanks to the benefits of momentum and the draft.

“That provides good racing and ramps up the intensity level too. We’re bringing one of our best trucks to the track, so hopefully, we can have a good finish.”

The Corrigan Oil 200 marks the final race of the regular season and while the odds are stacked against the team to be apart of the Playoffs, Self says his team doesn’t plan to change their approach from the regular season to the Playoffs.

“I have a lot of respect for the competitors in the Playoffs and I will race them with respect, but we still need to make our noise too,” added Self. “We have a great race team with talented people and a great group of marketing partners.

“If we’re in a position to contend for the win or a good finish, Playoffs or not, we’re going for it. The Playoffs are about the championship contenders, but we definitely want to use these upcoming races to make our own noise too.”

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 77th career Truck Series start.

GO TEXAN, celebrating its 20th Birthday this year, represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.

Along with its signature mark in the shape of Texas, GO TEXAN celebrates, promotes and supports the business savvy and plainspoken grit Texas agriculture is known for throughout the world.

AM Technical Solutions, Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle and Kreuz Market will serve as associate partners in the 16th race of the year.

In 76 NGOTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has one top-five (second at Daytona 2017) and six top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.1 during his three years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 13th in the championship standings with eight races remaining.

Austin Wayne Self and team ready to dig deep in the Eldora dirt

ROSSBURG, Ohio: The wait is finally over for NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) veteran Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf).

The series treks from one of the biggest tracks on the schedule to Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway for Thursday night’s Eldora Dirt Derby and the opportunity for Self and his AM Racing team to deliver their third top-10 finish together this season.

Surprisingly, without much dirt experience, the annual dirt race has become a favorite for the Austin, Texas native.

From the aggressive practice sessions to the qualifying races and the thunderous applause when the engines are fired – the two-day spectacle is an experience that Self embraces and doesn’t take for granted.

“I’ve been waiting for this week all year,” said Self. “I love Eldora Speedway and getting to race on dirt. I’ve always had good runs at this place, and I feel it’s all about driving here, way different than anything we do all year.

“I would say this is one of the biggest NASCAR races of the year and it’s a pretty awesome experience to be a part of it.”

Self, 23, will make his third start at Eldora and after finishing inside the top-10 in his track debut in 2016, the Texan is ready to bounce back from an 18th place finish last year and collect his second top-10 in the last three races.

“Eldora can be a very physical race,” mentioned Self. “Especially on race day. But it’s important to keep your cool and manage your tires so you have something to work with at the end of the race. You never know what to expect as far as cautions are concerned, so putting ourselves in good position track wise I think is going to be key.

“It’s going to be a fun couple of days and I can’t wait to get there.”

Self and his Eddie Troconis head to the Buckeye State on the heels of a respectable top-15 Truck Series finish at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, a weekend where Self ran double-duty and made his second ARCA Menards Series start of the season, earning a sixth-place finish in last Friday’s FORTS USA 150 at the 2.5-mile triangle.

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 76th career Truck Series start.

Riding Kentucky momentum; Austin Wayne Self set for double duty at Pocono Raceway

LONG POND, Pa.: Fresh off a solid sixth-place finish at Kentucky Speedway two weeks ago, NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) veteran Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) treks to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway hoping for back-to-back top-10 finishes in Saturday afternoon’s Gander RV 150.

It will be another busy weekend for Self as he is also scheduled to compete in Friday afternoon’s FORTS USA 150 ARCA Menards Series race driving the No. 32 Chevrolet for Win-Tron Racing, providing double the opportunity for the Austin, Texas native.

“It’s going to be a busy weekend, but I’m excited about it,” said Self. “I had a great time in my ARCA return at Chicagoland Speedway last month and I know that Win-Tron is going to bring me another fast Chevrolet this week.”

Pocono’s tricky three-turn 2.5-mile can be daunting for some, but its unique layout has been a race track that Self has quickly adapted too.

In three NGOTS starts, he has back-to-back top-20 finishes, while also delivering two top-10 finishes in four ARCA starts between 2014 and 2015.

This weekend though, top-20 finishes won’t do. Self is determined to deliver his No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet another top-10 run.

“Pocono is always a fun place to race,” added Self. “The strategies by the crew chief and engineer are very important – especially when weather can be an issue. I haven’t always had the best luck there, but I enjoy racing there. I look forward to the opportunity to turn around my finish in Long Pond and contend for our third top-10 Truck Series finish of the year on Saturday.”

Knowing that both the ARCA and Truck Series races are just a short 60-lap sprint, Self knows it’s critical for his AM Racing team to put themselves in a position to execute and with veteran crew chiefs on the box in both divisions, Self is prepared for whatever will be thrown his way.

“60 laps believe it or not goes by quickly, especially in the Truck Series with stages breaks,” offered Self. “For us, qualifying is going to be important, with the stages being really short you have to take advantage of track position before the field gets spread out.

“In the ARCA car, you can’t determine when a caution flag may wave so the race could be won by your trip to pit road, so this weekend offers the prime opportunity for strategy to be front and center, which provides an element of excitement for the fans.”

Like Chicagoland, IceBox Helmet Coolers will serve as the primary partner of Self’s No. 32 Chevrolet SS in his 49th career ARCA start.

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 75th career Truck Series start.

GO TEXAN, celebrating its 20th Birthday this year, represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.

Austin Wayne Self has busy weekend in Chicagoland return

JOLIET, Ill. – Determined to make their presence known in the second half of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) schedule, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team head to Chicagoland Speedway looking for a strong performance in Friday night’s Camping World 225.

Despite limited on-track time at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Self and crew chief Eddie Troconis overcame early race handling woes to preserve for a 17th-place finish.

With his sixth top-20 finish in the books after his ninth start of the season, Self, a native of Austin, Texas is determined to up the ante under the Windy City lights.

“It’s a bummer that we had limited track time at Gateway last weekend,” Self recalled. “I really felt that if we had more practice and been able to qualify – we probably would have had a better finish in our No. 22 GO TEXAN | Flying Circle Chevrolet.

“But, as still a relatively new group, I think race by race we’re making progress and we’re going to make our presence known.”

Self returns to Chicagoland Speedway with a hectic schedule. In addition to his Truck Series duties this week in Joliet, Self will make his ARCA Menards Series return in a collaborative effort between AM Racing and Win-Tron Racing.

For Self, he believes the extra track time will pay dividends in the 12th Truck Series race of the season.

“I’m ready to embrace a busy weekend at Chicagoland, actually, it’s going to be really fun,” said Self. “It’s been almost two years since I’ve been in an ARCA car and I know that the Win-Tron Racing guys are bringing me a fast race car.

“I hope I can apply some of that on-track time back to the Truck with Eddie (Troconis) and vice-versa. It would be really awesome to come out of Chicagoland with strong finishes in both series to carry us into the summer stretch.”

The 23-year-old has three prior Truck Series start at Chicagoland, earning a track-best 13th last year after starting 15th. He has finished no worse than 20th dating back to his first appearance in 2016.

In two ARCA starts at Chicagoland, he finished a track-best 12th after starting fourth in 2015.

“Chicago’s surface is pretty abrasive which presents opportunities for good racing,” added Self. “it’s important to make sure your truck is handling good over the bumps so that you can carry the speed you need into the corners. That’s our mission during practice on Thursday to make sure our truck is maneuvering through the bumps and seams so that I can drive it and carry it off into the corner.”

Austin Wayne Self returns to ARCA Menards Series at Chicagoland Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – In a collaborative effort between AM Racing and Win-Tron Racing, the two organizations announced today the return of NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) veteran Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) to the ARCA Menards Series (AMS) for Thursday night’s Bounty 150 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Self, 23, will drive the team’s No. 32 Chevrolet with support from Win-Tron Performance and IceBox Helmet Coolers.

“I’m excited about getting back and racing in the ARCA Menards Series,” said Self the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year.

“Win-Tron Racing has had some very competitive finishes this year and I know they are going to bring me a fast race car and I look forward to the opportunity to pull double duty this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.”

Self, a native of Austin, Texas last competed in ARCA nearly two years at Road America (Wisc.) where in a second entry for Win-Tron Racing he finished sixth after starting 12th in 2017.

In all, Self in five years of competition in ARCA has 47 career starts with one win, 13 top-five and 31 top-10 finishes. In two starts at Chicagoland, he finished a track-best 12th after starting fourth in 2015.

Win-Tron Racing has run a select schedule in the ARCA Series in 2019 with drivers Gus Dean and AM Racing development driver Cole Glasson.

Self who will compete in Friday night’s Camping World 225 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) race at Chicagoland is hopeful to run more ARCA races this season.

“We’re still looking at the schedule, but I think you’ll see me in or a race or two more after Chicagoland,” added Self. “I know that Kevin (Cywinski, Win-Tron Racing owner) and Jamie (Jones, crew chief) have put together a very competitive car and I look forward to our chance to go out there and contend for my second career ARCA win.”

Cywinski who serves as team manager of Self’s Gander Truck Series team says having Self compete in both races at Chicagoland will undoubtedly prove to be beneficial.

“Austin will do us a great job at Chicagoland,” sounded Cywinski. “The extra seat time will allow Austin to stay focused and bring back some positive feedback to not only the ARCA program but also acquire critical track time that should prove to be beneficial for the Truck Series program this weekend too.”
